Teacher’s Day History
Dr Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan commanded deep admiration among his students. It is said that in 1962, when Dr Radhakrishnan became President of India, some of his students sought his permission to celebrate his birthday. However, he humbly suggested that instead of celebrating his birthday, the day should be observed as Teacher’s Day, dedicated to honouring all teachers.
During his presidency from 1962 to 1967, Dr Radhakrishnan consistently preferred modest recognition, stressing that the day would hold greater meaning if it acknowledged the role of teachers in nation-building. Since then, September 5 has been celebrated annually across India as Teacher’s Day, honouring teachers and educationists for their roles in nation-building.
