The quarterfinals of the Duleep Trophy 2025 unleashed a raw gem. Turning up for the East Zone in Bengaluru was 21-year-old Jharkhand spinner Manishi, who stood out even in his team’s heavy first-innings battering against a strong North Zone side. While East Zone crashed out of the tournament after collapsing for just 230 against a North Zone side that piled on a mountain of runs in their two innings, Manishi made waves on his maiden Duleep Trophy call-up, securing a six-wicket haul.
In a week where Jammu & Kashmir seamer Auqib Nabi’s uncommon hat-trick grabbed the headlines, Manishi quietly entered the tournament’s top performers as his first-innings burst of 6 for 111 in 22.2 overs bagged him joint holdings of a unique record. The left-arm spinner went on to equal a world record for dismissing six batters lbw in an innings.
Manishi’s six-fer included LBW dismissals against Shubham Khajuria (26), Ankit Kumar (30), Yash Dhull (39), Kanhaiya Wadhawan (76), Nabi (44), and Harshit Rana (7). As he sent Rana back in the 92nd over of North Zone’s first innings, Manishi became only the sixth bowler in the history of first-class cricket to record six LBW dismissals in an innings and the first Indian to achieve this exceptional landmark.
Five bowlers have previously bagged this unique record in their respective careers and gone on to represent their countries at the highest level in Test cricket, including England’s Ollie Robinson (2021) and Mark Ilott (1995), Sri Lanka’s Chaminda Vaas (2005) and Pakistan’s Tabish Khan (2011). Manishi would hope his six-fer on his Duleep Trophy debut would be recalled as a stepping stone towards him donning the prestigious India whites in the future.

Born in Jamshedpur, Manishi earned his East Zone selection after impressing the zonal selectors very early in his red-ball career. The left-arm spinner has played only nine first-class matches in three years but has made a huge impact on his team’s fortunes whenever he has turned up. Manishi had a stand-out Ranji Trophy season last year, taking 22 wickets at an average of 27.22.
Notably, the youngster’s six-wicket spell on his first Duleep Trophy outing was also his maiden five-fer in first-class cricket, overhauling his previous best of 4/99 versus Tamil Nadu in January. Manishi has also represented India at the U-19 level in a four-day encounter against South Africa, a match where he took seven wickets.
