ITR Filing Due Date Extension: Demands to extend the due deadline of non-audit taxpayers for the income tax filing (ITR) for FY2024-25 (Assessment year 2025-26) have arisen in various groups, including, tax associations, CAs and tax experts, over technical glitches in the portal, delay in releasing Excel-utilities for ITR forms 2,3,5,6 and 7, data mismatches between AIS and Form 26AS, server crash and more.

The income tax department has extended the deadline for the ITR filing for FY2024-25 (Assessment Year 2025-26) for 45 days to September 15, 2025, from July 30, 2025. This new due date applies to individuals, Hindu Undivided Families (HUFs) and other taxpayers whose accounts don’t require auditing.

The tax department, however, hasn’t given any update on the extension of due date for filing ITR for FY2024-25 (AY 2025-26).

CA Ritu Gupta urged that due date to be extended to October 31, 2025, given that utilities released late, heavy rainfall everywhere, clashing due dates with audit dates. “we are chartered accountants and not AI who can work in adverse conditions,” she wrote in the post.

“In every tax season, the timely release of return forms and filing utilities is critical for smooth compliance. A reasonable filing window allows taxpayers and professionals to meet their obligations accurately and without undue stress. Last year is a case in point: ITR-1 to ITR-4 and ITR-6 were made available on April 1, 2024, followed by ITR-5 on May 31 and ITR-7 on June 21, giving taxpayers almost three months to prepare returns ahead of the July 31 deadline,” says Himank Singla, Partner, SBHS & Associates as quoted by Moneycontrol.

This year, the scenario is different. Although the CBDT extended the due date for non-audit cases from July 31, 2025, to September 15, 2025, the utilities for ITR-5, ITR-6, and ITR-7 were released only in August. ITR-2 and ITR-3 were also delayed, coming out on July 11, 2025, leaving taxpayers and professionals with a much shorter window to complete filings.

Earlier, the Chandigarh Chartered Taxation Association (CCATAX) had requested the Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT) to extend ITR and tax audit deadlines further for FY 2024-25 (Assessment year 2025-26).

In a letter to the CBDT as per ET Wealth report, the Gujarat Chamber of Commerce & Industry said the ITR filing process for AY 2025–26 has been hit by delays in the release of utilities, arriving nearly three months later than usual. Many forms were still unavailable in early August, leaving little time for preparation. Frequent changes to utilities and slow software updates add to the strain, especially in areas with patchy internet.
