Former Chennai Super Kings star Robin Uthappa has said that while Ravichandran Ashwin can be a ‘fascinating’ coach now that he has retired from all forms of Indian cricket, his life is going to be way more enterprising than being stuck in a coach’s job.
Ashwin, who will turn 39 in another two weeks, had announced his retirement from the Indian Premier League, which has now made him eligible to play in franchise-based T20 leagues across the globe.
India’s second-highest wicket-taker across formats, with 765 scalps from 287 international matches, will be the most high-profile name to play in a global league outside the Indian Premier League if any team happens to pick him at the auctions.
“I think he will make a fascinating coach. But I think his life is going to be way more enterprising than being stuck in a coach’s job. He’ll be a mentor of sorts. That will be a great role for him,” Uthappa said while speaking on his YouTube channel.
“He could be a head coach in the IPL. There could be some takers for him,” Uthappa said.
There is no chance of Ashwin becoming a coach in the Indian Premier League anytime soon as of yet. He expressed his desire to explore T20s around various global leagues.
“Yes, I am in talks with the organisers. Hopefully, I will have a buyer if I register for the auction,” Ashwin was quoted as saying by Cricbuzz.
Should the star Indian spinner find a buyer, he could become the fourth Indian to feature in the ILT20. Uthappa, Ambati Rayudu and Yusuf Pathan have played in the league in the past.
“I think his legacy (as an IPL player) won’t be as great as an international cricket player because of the options he utilised after a certain point. He used a lot of defensive options in the IPL compared to the offensive options he used in international cricket, especially Tests,” Ashwin said.
