Balancing protein intake is key, too much or too little can harm your health, but the right amount supports energy, muscle growth, and overall wellness.

Protein has the advantage of being filling, which can support weight loss by curbing chronic snacking
Protein is an essential component of your body composition. It is a complex molecule made of amino acids. Its role extends far beyond building muscles—it helps break down nutrients, supports muscle growth, and contributes to the production of hair, blood, hormones, antibodies, and more.
Dr. Twincy Ann Sunil, Bachelor’s in Clinical Nutrition & Dietetics, Apollo Spectra Hospital, Bangalore, shares all you need to know:
There was a time when protein sources were limited to meats, seafood, eggs, tofu, pumpkin seeds, and similar whole foods. Today, with growing awareness about protein’s importance, it has found its way into a wide range of products, helping people more easily meet their daily requirements.
However, consuming too much or too little protein can be equally harmful. Excess protein is excreted through the kidneys—potentially leading to dehydration—or converted into fat, which can cause weight gain.
The first step is to calculate and understand your individual protein needs. Requirements vary based on weight, sex, age, and health status. For a general adult who does not exercise regularly, a simple guideline is to consume at least 0.8 grams of protein per kilogram of body weight.
Protein also has the advantage of being filling, which can support weight loss by curbing chronic snacking. But relying on it excessively may deprive your body of essential nutrients from carbohydrates and healthy fats. This is why it’s best to consume only the amount of protein your body requires especially if you are not physically active.
