Calling it a major boost for Make in India, the Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnav said the development marks an important milestone in India’s journey towards self-reliance in electronics.

Union Minister for Electronics and Information Technology Ashwini Vaishnaw on Sunday inaugurated India’s first tempered glass manufacturing facility for mobile devices at Noida. The plant has been set up by Optiemus Electronics in partnership with US-based Corning Incorporated and will produce high-quality tempered glass under the globally recognised brand “Engineered by Corning” for both domestic and export markets.

Calling it a major boost for Make in India, the Minister said the development marks an important milestone in India’s journey towards self-reliance in electronics. “Step by step, India will manufacture every component of mobile devices including chips, cover glasses, laptops, and servers, making the country a global hub for electronics manufacturing,” Vaishnaw said, adding that a Made in India chip will be launched soon.

He highlighted that electronics production in India has grown six times in the past 11 years to Rs 11.5 lakh crore, with exports crossing Rs 3 lakh crore and 2.5 million people employed directly and indirectly. Stressing India’s design capabilities, he cited an IIT Madras-incubated startup that has developed the country’s first microcontroller, while Indian railway equipment is already being exported to Europe.

The new facility involves an initial investment of Rs 70 crore, with Phase 1 offering a capacity of 25 million units annually and creating 600 jobs. Phase 2, with an additional Rs 800 crore investment, will scale up to 200 million units a year and generate over 4,500 jobs.

Optiemus said the facility integrates advanced processes like shaping, polishing, chemical tempering, coating, and lamination under strict quality controls, bringing world-class tempered glass production to India for the first time.

Vaishnaw added that India’s 7.8% GDP growth in Q1 FY26 reflects a vibrant and innovation-driven economy, urging youth to contribute towards Atmanirbhar Bharat and Viksit Bharat 2047.
