Shubman Gill resumes training ahead of Asia Cup
Shubman Gill is back at the training ground after missing the first round of the Duleep Trophy 2025. The 25-year-old was supposed to lead the North Zone team in the tournament that marked the beginning of India’s domestic season 2025-26. However, he was struck by viral fever and had to give it a miss.
Gill, who has been appointed India’s vice-captain for the Asia Cup, was reportedly scheduled to check in at the BCCI’s Centre of Excellence before flying to Dubai. However, the recent video on social media suggests that he has begun the grind. Interestingly, he was seen batting against a left-arm pacer, probably to prepare himself against Pakistan’s attack.
The Times of India previously reported that Gill would arrive in Bengaluru on Friday to start training at BCCI’s COE before the Asia Cup. After recovering from a viral flu, he will undergo a routine assessment to fine-tune his preparations.
The report also mentioned that Gill completed two gym sessions in Mohali and had a batting practice on Thursday. Due to persistent rains in North India, finding suitable practice facilities near his home was challenging.
Gill might depart for Dubai directly from Bengaluru, as some other members of the Asia Cup-bound team are already there. The 15-member Indian team, led by Suryakumar Yadav, will gather in Dubai on September 4 for the Asia Cup, which begins on September 9.
Previous reports indicated that there is significant activity at BCCI’s Centre of Excellence, with top cricketers either participating in the Duleep Trophy or undergoing routine tests ahead of the Asia Cup.
In a break from tradition, cricketers will travel to Dubai in a staggered manner from their respective locations, rather than assembling in Mumbai before departure. This decision was made to accommodate logistical and travel convenience for the players.
“All the players will arrive in Dubai by the evening of September 4, and the first net session will be held on September 5 at the ICC Academy. Considering logistical convenience, players will be allowed to fly into Dubai from their respective cities,” a senior BCCI official told PTI.
