The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has reportedly offered an all-format mentorship job to decorated former captain MS Dhoni. However, as per the report by CricBlogger, he’s unlikely to take up the role until Gautam Gambhir is at the helm as the head coach in all three formats.
The report said it’s a ‘broad’ role, which will include the women’s and junior cricket teams to groom the upcoming stars in the country, as the board believes Dhoni could be influential there. The former skipper was apparently offered the job after his brief stint in the position during the 2021 T20 World Cup, but now, the BCCI has made another effort to get the Ranchi star on board.
The report added that Dhoni, though, wants to avoid any overlapping responsibilities with Gambhir due to their ‘history of differences dating back to their playing days’. Further, Dhoni is said to be more focused on preparing himself for the next season at Chennai Super Kings (CSK), which could likely be his last.
Dhoni, 44, has been pushing the limits of age to continue to play for CSK. He has never taken up any coaching responsibilities at a high level, and rumors about him taking up a mentorship role at the franchise often come up.
However, even Gambhir didn’t have any coaching experience before becoming India’s all-format boss. He had been a successful mentor at Lucknow Super Giants and then won the IPL 2024 with his former franchise, Kolkata Knight Riders, in the same role.
Currently, he’s at a delicate stage too. Under him, the ODI and T20I teams have maintained the progress from Rahul Dravid’s era and have won the 2025 Champions Trophy, too.
The red-ball team, meanwhile, despite the recent drawn series in England, hasn’t looked at its best in terms of consistency, suffering big defeats in Australia and a home whitewash. Though the draw can buy Gambhir some time, it needs to be seen how well he can manage to juggle the big responsibilities.
