Tamil Nadu wicketkeeper-batter N Jagadeesan, chosen for India’s squad for the fifth Test of the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy in England, revealed that during his time with Chennai Super Kings (CSK) in the Indian Premier League (IPL), former top-order batter Robin Uthappa taught him various lessons beyond batting.
Jagadeesan bonded with Uthappa, his mentor, after playing together at CSK from 2020 to 2022. Despite the presence of stalwarts like MS Dhoni and Ravindra Jadeja, the 29-year-old credited Uthappa for teaching him how to handle tough times and stay composed during setbacks.
“Robin has instilled more discipline in me regarding how to approach each session. He has taught me many things, making me calm and secure, not just as a cricketer but as an individual, and to stay present. When it comes to batting, Guru sir [AG Guruswamy] and Narasimha [both coaches in Tamil Nadu] have helped me,” Jagadeesan told ESPNcricinfo.
Jagadeesan frames and displays his jerseys on the wall at his home in Coimbatore. His father left a frame empty, hoping it would one day hold his son’s India jersey. Jagadeesan fulfilled this dream by being included in the fifth Test at The Oval against England. Although he was a reserve player, he was part of India’s dramatic six-run victory.
“The India jersey is now going into the frame, and I hope to add many more. Being part of such an intense and thrilling match made it even more special. Winning the game from an unexpected situation was truly remarkable and gave me goosebumps,” he added.
Jagadeesan earned his call-up after scoring an impressive 1,490 runs in 26 innings, averaging nearly 65. Among batters from the Elite Group, only Karun Nair, who returned to India’s Test fold after eight years, scored more runs (1,553) than Jagadeesan in the previous two Ranji seasons.
