In recent months, a string of Indian cricketers have bid farewell to the game, with Cheteshwar Pujara being the latest to announce his retirement. While the BCCI extends pension benefits to former players, questions are now being raised over how much they receive and whether the payout structure has kept pace with time.
Pension Scheme For Retired Cricketers
The BCCI introduced a pension scheme for former players, offering a fixed monthly amount to those who have played at the international and domestic levels. This pension amount is determined based on the number of matches played and the player’s level of participation. Age also plays a crucial role in the BCCI’s pension scheme, with an increase in pension amount as the player grows older. For instance, once a player surpasses the age of 60, their pension amount is adjusted upwards.
Do Retired Players Get A Yearly Pension Hike?
Contrary to annual increments, the pension does not increase every year. However, the BCCI revises the pension amount periodically. In recent years, the pension amounts have been increased multiple times to ensure former cricketers can cope with financial challenges due to inflation and changing economic conditions.
Who Is Eligible For The Pension Benefit?
Eligibility for this pension scheme extends to cricketers who have represented India in international matches or have had substantial careers in domestic cricket. Women cricketers also benefit from this scheme, and there are separate pension provisions for umpires and some senior officials.
How Much Pension Do Retired Players Receive?
In the last few years, BCCI has significantly raised the pension amounts. Test cricketers’ pensions were increased from Rs 37,500 to Rs 60,000 per month. Similarly, first-class cricketers saw their pension rise from Rs 15,000 to Rs 30,000 per month. Senior players, who previously received Rs 50,000, now receive Rs 70,000 per month.
