This International Dog Day, let’s pledge to do more than just celebrate our furry companions.

Caring for a dog is a lifelong commitment, and small, consistent habits can make an enormous difference in their quality of life.
International Dog Day is not only the celebration of the companionship and unconditional love our dogs introduce into our lives, but it is also the reminder of our obligation towards their happiness and health. Much like we adopt daily routines in order to enhance our own well-being, our canine friends fare best when we integrate conscious habits into their daily routine.
Dr Deepak Saraswat, Head Vet at Zigly shares five simple but powerful practices every pet parent can follow:
• Prioritize a Balanced Diet
A well-nourished dog is a happy dog. All breeds, ages, and lifestyles demand a specially tailored nutrition approach. Rather than offering table scraps or sporadic treats, make sure your dog’s food is filled with premium proteins, vitamins, and minerals. Consult your vet to address any special dietary needs, whether it is for joint health, skin conditions, or managing weight.
• Commit to Regular Exercise
Exercise is not only about physical health, exercise is also crucial for mental stimulation. Daily strolls, playtime that is engaging, and activities such as agility training or fetch assist with energy management and avoiding behavior problems. Even 20-30 minutes of quality movement daily can dramatically improve your dog’s mood and overall health.
• Routine Health Check-Ups and Vaccinations
Preventive healthcare is the strongest defense against illness. Annual check-ups, timely vaccinations, deworming, and dental examinations go a long way in detecting issues before they become serious. Dogs live quicker lives than humans, and regular visits to the vet ensure that they stay in your life for more, healthier years.
• Mental Stimulation Through Training and Play Dogs really love learning. Positive reinforcement training, puzzle toys, and scent games not only keep them mentally sharp but also strengthen your relationship. Boredom can create destructive behaviors, keeping your dog mentally stimulated is a critical component of their wellbeing.
• Show Consistent Love and Care Not only nutrition and exercise, but emotional well-being also plays a huge role in your dog’s life. Simple gestures such as belly rubs, talking to your dog, or maintaining a predictable routine make them feel secure and loved. These furry companions are quite intuitive, and they thrive on affection and attention from their family.
This International Dog Day, let’s pledge to do more than just celebrate our furry companions. Caring for a dog is a lifelong commitment, and small, consistent habits can make an enormous difference in their quality of life. After all, the joy our pets give us each day deserves to be matched with our dedication to their health, happiness, and well-being.
