ITR Refund 2025: Many taxpayers are experiencing delays in receiving their income tax refunds. While the income tax department usually processes refunds within 20-45 days after e-verification, several factors can hold up the payment. Here’s a breakdown of the most common reasons:

Reasons for Refund Delay

E-verification pending: Your return will not be processed until the ITR is e-verified.

Physical verification delays: If you opted to send your ITR-V physically to the Centralised Processing Centre (CPC) Bengaluru, late delivery can push back processing.

High processing load: Refunds may be delayed if the department faces a surge in return filings.

Discrepancies in ITR: Errors or inconsistencies flagged by the department could pause refunds until clarified.

Bank account issues: Incorrect or inactive bank accounts, or account restrictions, can stop crediting of refunds.

Outstanding tax dues: Refunds may be adjusted against pending tax liabilities.

System glitches: Technical snags at the IT department or your bank can occasionally delay processing.

Portal updates: System upgrades or changes to the e-filing portal may temporarily slow down processing.

Refund reissue requirement: If a refund was issued but not credited, you may need to raise a reissue request.

How to Check Refund Status?

  • Visit incometax.gov.in.
  • Log in with PAN (user ID), password, and captcha.
  • Go to ‘View Returns/Forms’ → ‘Income Tax Returns’.
  • Select the relevant assessment year and submit.
  • Click on the ITR acknowledgment number to see refund status.

Refund details are also available in Form 26AS under ‘Tax Credit Statements’. If bank details are incorrect, the portal may display: “No Records Found”.

What To Do If Refund Is Delayed

  • Complete e-verification without delay.
  • Re-check ITR for errors and respond to any notices.
  • Ensure bank details are correct and updated.
  • Track refund status regularly.
  • Contact your Assessing Officer if delays persist.
  • File a grievance through the e-filing portal if required.

Beware of Scams

The income tax department has warned of a surge in ITR refund scams. Fraudsters are using fake calls, phishing emails, and pop-up alerts to steal sensitive information. Always verify communications only through official IT department channels.
