Apple’s security update has alerted the Indian government

The Indian government has followed up with its own security warning for iPhone users in the country. Apple has already issued an update for its devices which has come in the form of a new iOS 18.6 update and now the country’s government is giving further impetus for the users to take this warning seriously and secure their devices right away.

The Indian Computer Emergency Response Team or CERT-In has issued a new alert this month, which concerns iPhone users as well as the iPad and Mac users in the country and other regions. The new iPhone 17 launch is coming next month but existing iPhone users, millions of them, should adhere to the latest advice from both Apple and the government.

iPhone Security Risk: What The Govt Warning Says

The Apple warning clearly highlights some of the issues faced by its products that can be exploited by a remote attacker to steal data. “This vulnerability exists in the ImageIO component of Apple products due to improper bounds checking. A remote attacker could exploit this flaw by tricking a victim into processing a specially crafted image file, leading to an out-of-bounds write and subsequent memory corruption,” the CERT-In bulletin shares the matter in detail.

While the issue itself might be too technical for many users, what it says is that anybody using an Apple product could be at risk if they don’t install the latest available version for their iPhone, iPad or Mac. The high severity rating of the latest risk alert also tells you the seriousness of these vulnerabilities.

And these are the devices running on the following versions that need to protect themselves from these attacks:

  • Apple iOS and iPadOS versions prior to 18.6.2
  • Apple iPadOS versions prior to 17.7.10
  • Apple macOS Sequoia versions prior to 15.6.1 (for macOS Sequoia)
  • Apple macOS Sonoma versions prior to 14.7.8 (for macOS Sonoma)
  • Apple macOS Ventura versions prior to 13.7.8 (for macOS Ventura

The iOS 18.6.2 update was recently introduced by Apple and now available for iPhone XS and later models. If you have moved to the iOS 26 beta versions, this update will not be available for your device unless you downgrade to the older available version. Similarly, you have the iPadOS and macOS versions in question that are prone to these vulnerabilities.

Apple’s security note comes with a critical warning that these issues might have already been exploited, and it doesn’t know about it as of today. However, the company has identified the issues, and how to fix them, which is why you have updates available for all these Apple devices.

Now, all you have to do is go to Settings – General – Software update to install the new update and secure your devices.
