Tesla CEO Elon Musk has announced the launch of a new artificial intelligence venture named Macrohard, designed to challenge Microsoft’s dominance in the software industry.

The announcement came on Friday through a post on Musk’s social media platform, X, where he described the name as “tongue-in-cheek”, but stressed that the project is entirely real.

“Join @xAI and help build a purely AI software company called Macrohard. It’s a tongue-in-cheek name, but the project is very real!,” he wrote.

Musk explained that companies like Microsoft do not manufacture physical hardware, and therefore, it should be possible to recreate their software operations entirely using AI.

“In principle, given that software companies like Microsoft do not themselves manufacture any physical hardware, it should be possible to simulate them entirely with AI,” he added.

What Is Macrohard?

While Musk did not share further details, his AI chatbot Grok, in response to a user’s query on X, said that Macrohard’s goal is to simulate the full workings of a tech giant like Microsoft — from development to management — using AI alone.

“Macrohard is xAI’s playful project name (a nod to Microsoft) for building a fully AI-simulated software company. The goal: since firms like Microsoft produce no physical hardware, AI could theoretically replicate their entire operations—from coding to management. It’s real, and we’re hiring!” Grok wrote.

According to official records, xAI applied for a trademark for “Macrohard” on 1 August. The filing mentions a wide range of AI-powered products and services, such as software for generating human-like speech and text, and chatbot programmes for simulating conversation, NDTV reported.

The idea builds on earlier plans Musk revealed in July, where he spoke about creating a multi-agent AI company. He described a system where hundreds of AI agents, powered by xAI’s Grok, work together to perform complex tasks, including coding and media generation, inside virtual machines.

At that time, Musk teased the company’s name by calling it a “macro challenge and a hard problem with stiff competition.”
