SGB Redemption Calendar: The Reserve Bank of India has announced the premature redemption calendar for the Sovereign Gold Bond (SGB) Scheme from October 2025 to March 2026. The SGB scheme allows premature redemption of the gold bond after five years from the date of issue of such bonds.

Investors can see the dates of tranches falling due for premature redemption during the period October 01, 2025 – March 31, 2026, along with the window available for submission of a request for premature redemption by the investors.

RBI will accordingly announce the redemption value of these tranches before the start of the premature dates on the basis of the simple average closing price of the gold of 999 purity published by the India Bullion and Jewellers Association (IBJA) for the preceding three working days.

SGB scheme was India’s government initiative to offer investors an investment avenue in gold without holding them physically. Several tranches of the gold bond were being launched from 2015 until the closure in February 2023.

Sovereign Gold Bonds (SGBs) can be redeemed prematurely after completing five years from the date of issuance, typically on specified interest payment dates (semi-annually). Below is a step-by-step guide to redeeming SGBs after the premature redemption date.

Step-by-Step Process for Premature Redemption of Sovereign Gold Bonds

  • Check Eligibility for Premature Redemption
  • Confirm that your SGB has completed at least five years from the issue date.
  • Verify the premature redemption dates, which align with the bond’s interest payment dates (usually semi-annual).
  • Gather Required Documents  Bond Certificate or Demat Account

Details: You’ll need the physical bond certificate (if held in paper form) or demat account details (if held in dematerialized form).

Identity Proof: Provide a valid ID such as a PAN card, as it’s mandatory for SGB transactions.

Bank Account Details: Ensure the bank account linked to your SGB is active and updated, as redemption proceeds will be credited there.

Nominee Verification Documents (if applicable): Required if redeeming on behalf of a deceased bondholder.

Submit a Redemption Request  Contact the issuing institution where you purchased the SGB, such as:

  • Banks (e.g., State Bank of India, Bank of India, Kotak Securities).
  • Stock Holding Corporation of India Limited (SHCIL).
  • Designated post offices.
  • National Stock Exchange (NSE), Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE), or NSDL/CDSL for demat bonds.

Submit a written redemption request at least 30 days before the coupon (interest) payment date. Some institutions, like Kotak Securities or Zerodha, may require the request 10 days in advance or one day before the coupon date.

If using a broker like Kotak Securities, request the Mutual Fund Redemption Form – Annexure HA, fill it out, and submit it with signatures.

For demat bonds, redemption can often be processed online via NSDL or CDSL platforms.

Pay Any Applicable Fees

Some institutions may charge a redemption fee. For example:  Zerodha charges Rs 150 + 18% GST for rematerialization or redemption.

Kotak Securities charges Rs 32 or 0.04% of the redemption value (whichever is higher) + 18% GST.

Confirm with your institution whether any fees apply.

Verify Submission and Processing

Ensure your request is submitted within the specified window (e.g., 30 days before the coupon date, as per RBI guidelines). Late submissions may delay processing until the next redemption window.

Check for any liens on your SGB holdings, as these must be cleared before redemption.

For example, the RBI calendar lists redemption dates like April 16, 2025, for SGB 2017-18 Series III, or September 11, 2025, for SGB 2019-20 Series X.

Receive Redemption Proceeds

The redemption price is calculated based on the simple average of the closing price of 999-purity gold for the last three business days before the redemption date, as published by the India Bullion and Jewellers Association (IBJA).

Proceeds (principal + final interest) will be credited to the bank account linked to your SGB or provided at the time of purchase. Ensure account details are updated to avoid delays.

For instance, SGB 2019-20 Series X, issued at Rs 3,996 per gram, had a premature redemption price of Rs 8,596 per unit in March 2025.
