Even as pictures and clips of India stalwarts Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma’s training sessions ahead of their potential India return in October continue to be shared widely on social media, a latest report claims that the BCCI will hold discussions with the two regarding their international futures.
According to Dainik Jagran, depending on outcome of the discussions, a decision will be made in regard to the direction of Indian ODI team. There’s report of the board zeroing in on Shreyas Iyer as the next ODI captain but it’s a decision that hinges on whether Rohit wants to continue playing the format and for how long.
The next ODI World Cup will be held in Africa in 2027 and the aim will be to have a long-term captain as India aim to win the trophy for the first time since 2011 having come frustratingly close to do so in 2023 when they lost to Australia in the final.
Both Kohli and Rohit have retired from Tests and T20Is with the selection committee successfully overseeing transitions in the two formats. Chairman of selectors Ajit Agarkar has reportedly been rewarded with his contract extended toll June 2026 after the team won two ICC trophies in his tenure.
Kohli will be nearing 39 when the next world cup rolls in while Rohit will be 40. Another report claims that the three-match ODI series in Australia could be the final such of their careers.
Clear Plan For 2027 World Cup
Earlier this month, PTI had also stated that the BCCI wants to move ahead with a clear plan for the 2027 ODI World Cup. Whether Kohli and Rohit are part of that is a call that will only be taken once they have been spoken with. The board is in no rush, as of now.
“Yes, it will be discussed soon. We still have more than two years for the next World Cup (November 2027). Both Kohli and Rohit will be pushing 40 by then, so there has to be a clear plan ahead for the big event as our last win was in 2011. We also need to try out a few youngsters in time,” news agency PTI quoted a source as saying.
