Shubman Gill is the captain of India’s Test team, and on Tuesday (August 19) he was appointed as vice-captain of the T20I team picked for the Asia Cup 2025. Gill, who impressed with his batting performance in the first Test series as captain against England, is seen as the next all-format captain of the Indian team by former greats and experts of the game. But according to IPL legend Ambati Rayudu, who also played 55 ODIs and six T20Is for India from 2013 to 2019, Punjab Kings captain Shreyas Iyer should become the next ODI captain after Rohit Sharma.
Iyer, who won the IPL title as captain of the Kolkata Knight Riders in 2024, also led the Delhi Capitals and Punjab Kings to the IPL final in 2020 and 2025, respectively.
During a YouTube podcast by Shubhankar Mishra, when Rayudu was asked who he thinks should become India’s ‘next ODI captain after Rohit – Gill, Iyer or someone else’, he mentioned Iyer’s name.
“(Shreyas) Iyer. I think Iyer. He has extraordinary calmness. He has taken KKR to be the champions. Then the way he has led a young Punjab team. Nobody was giving them a chance even. He is an extraordinary captain, and he should become captain soon,” Rayudu said.
Iyer is a regular member of India’s ODI team. In the last ODI assignment of Team India – which was the ICC Champions Trophy 2025 – he finished as the leading run getter for the Rohit Sharma-led side.
Iyer has played 70 ODIs for India so far, and in 65 innings, with the help of five centuries and 22 fifties, he has scored 2845 runs. Iyer has a batting average of 48.22 in the 50-over format of the game.
In the 2023 edition of the ICC Men’s ODI World Cup, Iyer scored a total of 530 runs in 11 matches, which also includes a knock of 105 runs against the New Zealand team in the first semifinal played at Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai on November 15, 2023.
On the other hand, world No. 1 ODI batter Shubman Gill has scored 2775 runs in 55 ODIs for Team India. Gill has crossed the 100-run mark eight times in one-day cricket and has 15 fifties to his credit. His ODI batting average is 59.04, and his best score is 208 runs from 149 balls.
