Gill has scored 571 runs in 21 T20Is for India, whereas Jaiswal has amassed a total of 723 runs in 23 matches played so far in the shortest format for the Men in Blue.

Shubman Gill and Yashasvi Jaiswal were in contention for a place in India’s Asia Cup 2025 squad as third opener, and on Tuesday (August 19), when the 15-member team was announced by chief selector Ajit Agarkar at BCCI headquarters in Mumbai, it was Gill who managed to pip Jaiswal. Gill’s inclusion over Jaiswal, who has scored more runs, fours, sixes and 50s and even has a better average and strike rate, came as a surprise for many.
But according to a report in the Indian Express, the 25-year-old right-handed batter from Punjab, who also captains India’s Test team, was preferred because India’s head coach Gautam Gambhir and selectors want to groom him as captain. And this is the reason why he was appointed India’s vice-captain as well over Axar Patel.

“Suryakumar Yadav is less than a month away from turning 35, and the need to find his long-term replacement as India’s T20 captain prompted the decision-makers to include Test skipper Shubman Gill as his deputy for the upcoming Asia Cup,” Indian Express reported.
“It was the matter that consumed most of the time at Tuesday’s selection meeting, and head coach Gautam Gambhir, who joined online, was also of the view that India needs to groom someone for the future, and Gill, who turns 26 next month, was the most eligible candidate,” the report added.
The report also added, “Gill wasn’t the first choice initially, and some people felt that Axar Patel should continue the role of vice-captaincy. But the overall mood at the selection meeting was that it’s better to invest in a player who is likely to serve Indian cricket for long. The panel couldn’t find any other candidate whom they can hand over responsibility for the next five years. As Gill is already leading in Test cricket, the selectors felt it was the right time to prepare him to take over from Surya some time in the future. As a result, Yashasvi Jaiswal, who also impressed on the England tour and has had an impressive start to his international career, had to miss out.”
Gill, who has played 21 T20Is so far, captained India in five matches last year against Zimbabwe in Harare and won four of them.
