Bank Holiday Today: As a Hindu festival, Janmashtami falls today, August 16, and also on the 3rd Saturday; there has been confusion among people regarding the banking holiday. The RBI has designated certain days as public holidays on the occasion of religious or constitutional events. Even though banks remain closed during a public holiday, online services remain functional as usual, allowing customers to send or receive money, avail net banking and many more. During the public holiday in banks, only offline services will be hampered.

Are Banks Closed Today, August 16 On Janmashtami?

RBI has designated Janmashtami (Shravan Vad-8) / Krishna Jayanthi as a public holiday as per RBI’s holiday list. However, it’s not a country-wide holiday with the closure of banks only in certain parts across the country. As per RBI’s list, banks in Aizawl, Chennai, Hyderabad, Patna, Raipur, Ranchi, Vijayawada, Gangtok, Chandigarh, Jammu, Srinagar will be closed.

Banks not mentioned in the above list will remain functional as usual.

RBI has designated only 2nd and 4th Saturdays as bank holidays.

Janmashtami, also known as Krishna Janmashtami or Gokulashtami, is a Hindu festival celebrating the birth of Lord Krishna, the eighth avatar of Vishnu. It typically falls in August or September, on the eighth day (Ashtami) of the Krishna Paksha (dark fortnight) in the month of Bhadrapada, according to the Hindu lunar calendar.
