Independence Day Movies To Watch: India is celebrating its 79th Independence Day today, on August 15. As we celebrate the occasion, it should be remembered that our independence came at the cost of struggles and sacrifices. More than several decades have passed since many films provided a better insight into the nation’s glorious heritage and the sacrifices made during its struggle for independence.

Here are films that reflect the essence of nationalism and the sacrifices made by innumerable people to attain our freedom.

Border (1997)

Border is a movie based on the 1971 India-Pakistan War. It is the true story of the Battle of Longewala. It shows how a group of about 120 Indian soldiers braving all odds and defending their position in the Thar desert against a Pakistani army of about 2,000 soldiers and many tanks. The film pays tribute to the Indian troops’ bravery and sacrifices and is a must-see movie.

Lagaan: Once Upon a Time in India (2001)

Set against the backdrop of British occupation, Lagaan chronicles a village beset by excessive taxation. The people accept a singular challenge: a game of cricket against the British officers. It becomes an emblem of collective rebellion and solidarity, showing how sports can overcome social boundaries and fuel the battle for justice. Victory will liberate them from the tax burden for three years.

Sardar Udham (2021)

This biographical drama follows the life of Udham Singh. He was an Indian revolutionary best known for avenging the Jallianwala Bagh massacre by killing Michael O’Dwyer in London. The film looks back at that ill-fated Baisakhi day in 1919, when British soldiers opened fire on a peaceful procession in Amritsar, killing hundreds and injuring more than a thousand. It shows how Singh came of the tragedy and undertook a lifelong crusade to remember the victims.

Uri: The Surgical Strike (2019)

Uri is an action-filled depiction of the Indian Army’s commando raids on militant camps in Pakistan-occupied Kashmir. The film stitches together 11 moments that led to the audacious mission, carried out in retaliation against the attack on the Uri Army base on September 18, 2016, that killed 17 Indian soldiers. Mixing tactical accuracy with patriotism, it pays homage to the bravery, discipline and sacrifices of the soldiers.

Manikarnika: The Queen of Jhansi (2019)

This period drama is about Rani Lakshmi Bai who became one of the prominent names of the 1857 Revolt against British control. Following the death of her husband, having no natural heir to the throne, the British tried to annex Jhansi under the Doctrine of Lapse. Refusing to bow down to them, she said, “I shall not give up my Jhansi.” She commanded her troops courageously against the British siege. Fighting valiantly against impossible odds, she fought to safeguard her kingdom’s independence.
