Former Indian cricketer Anil Kumble celebrated World Elephant Day on Tuesday, August 12 and called for the protection and preservation of the giant animal. The former India captain, who has always been a wildlife enthusiast, passed on a wonderful message to safeguard the wild elephants from various threats, including illegal shooting and poaching, that are harmful to global biodiversity.
“They remember, they feel, they move with a calm that conceals their strength and they protect their own – just like we should protect them. This #WorldElephantDay, let’s give these gentle giants the space, safety and respect they deserve,” penned the great Jumbo in a heartfelt post, containing an image captured by the legend himself from the Nagarhole National Park in Karnataka.

Observed annually, World Elephant Day is dedicated to raising awareness about the plight of elephants across the globe and the urgent need for action to protect them from multiple dangers. Hailed as the gentle giants of the animal kingdom, Elephants symbolise great virtues of strength, peace and wisdom.
They also play a highly influential role in maintaining the balance of the ecosystem. By protecting these gentle giants, we can play our part in conserving the forests and grasslands where they have their natural habitats, thus boosting biodiversity and the overall climate.
Kumble, who had an illustrious career for India playing 132 Tests and 271 One-Day Internationals, has frequently raised concerns over wildlife degradation and called for authorities to protect different animals that influence our ecosystem massively. India’s highest Test wicket-taker once again urged others to take part in wildlife conservation practices on the occasion of World Elephant Day.
The great bowler has been quite active on social media. Kumble celebrated the 35th anniversary of his Test debut for India during the 1990 tour of England on August 9 with a wonderful LinkedIn post, underlining the lessons he learnt as he embarked upon his inspirational journey.
“Looking back, it certainly wasn’t a dream start; I bowled 60 overs, took three wickets and didn’t make any headlines. However, that day taught me a profound lesson that I still hold onto: you don’t need to begin with a bang to build something truly meaningful,” Kumble wrote.
“In cricket, we often celebrate the five-wicket hauls and the match-winning spells, but the truth is, behind every highlight reel are years of quiet, consistent effort. This includes early mornings, extensive net sessions and the resilience to keep showing up even on days when things aren’t going your way.”
