Indian men’s Test cricket team captain Shubman Gill will play for North Zone in the Duleep Trophy 2025. The 25-year-old right-handed batter from Punjab was included in North Zone’s squad last week for the six-team tournament starting in Bengaluru on August 28. Apart from Gill, Yashasvi Jaiswal, Shreyas Iyer, Dhruv Jurel, Sarfaraz Khan, Arshdeep Singh, Kuldeep Yadav, Shardul Thakur, Akash Deep, Anshul Kamboj and Mohammed Shami will also feature in the Duleep Trophy 2025.
Gill’s decision to represent North Zone in the Duleep Trophy earned him big praise from former India skipper and legendary opening batter Sunil Gavaskar.
In his latest column for Sportstar, Gavaskar wrote that by being available for the Duleep Trophy, Gill is sending the right signal to his other teammates.
“Shubman Gill captaining the North Zone team is a massive shot in the arm for this tournament. By being available for the tournament, the Indian skipper is sending the right signal to the other members of the team. It would have been understandable if, after a gruelling tour where five Test matches were crammed in a little over six weeks, he had opted to rest.”
Gavaskar, who was the first batter in the world to score 10,000 runs in Test cricket, also praised Gill’s batting in the five-match Test series between India and England. Gill played all five Tests against the English team and, with the help of four centuries, scored 754 runs.
“There will be several moments to cherish from the series: Gill’s batting—very rarely do you get to see batting as pure as this—and his captaincy, Stokes’ superhuman efforts with both bat and ball, the Indian fast bowlers’ marathon spells, Joe Root’s classy centuries, Rishabh Pant batting as only he can, as also Harry Brook, and both also chirping as only they can.”
He also gave a special mention to Mohammed Siraj in his column.
“But the enduring memory will always be Mohammed Siraj’s yorker that flattened the off-stump of Gus Atkinson to give India a win to level the series. After the disappointing last season in Test cricket, this would no doubt be the happiest moment in recent times for Indian cricket lovers.”
