The century in the second innings of the Oval Test helps Root break the world record of home centuries in home Tests. Root has scored 24 of his 39 Test centuries in England.

Joe Root entered his name in the history books on Sunday (August 3) by breaking the record for scoring the most centuries in home Tests. Root’s century in the second innings of the ongoing fifth India-England Test at The Oval is his 24th Test century in England, which is one more than Ricky Ponting, Jacques Kallis, and Mahela Jayawardene’s tally of 23 Test centuries at home.
Root completed his century by taking two runs on the first ball of the 69th over of England’s second innings bowled by Akash Deep in the third session of the fourth day’s play at The Oval.

The century in the fifth Test also helped Root break Jack Hobbs’ record of scoring 12 Test centuries against one team for England. During his playing days, Hobbs scored 12 Test centuries for England against Australia, and Root now has 13 centuries to his credit against India in Tests.
Only Don Bradman has scored more centuries against one team in Tests now than Root.

In addition to that, during his stay at the crease on Sunday, Root became the first player in the world to score 6000 runs in the World Test Championship, and he also became the first player to score at least 500 runs in a Test series against India three times.
During their playing days, Everton Weekes and Garry Sobers of the West Indies, Zaheer Abbas and Younis Khan of Pakistan, and Ricky Ponting of Australia scored 500 runs twice in a Test series against India.
