Shubman Gill entered his name in the history books on Saturday (August 2) by breaking English batting great Graham Gooch’s record of scoring the most runs in a Test series played between India and England. Gooch, who served as England’s captain in the past, played three Tests against India in England in 1990 and scored a total of 752 runs.
Gill, who is leading the Indian team in the ongoing Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy, scored 722 runs in the first four matches, and he needed to score at least 31 runs in the fifth Test at The Oval to go past Gooch’s tally. He made 21 runs in the first innings which left him 10 runs away from breaking Gooch’s 35-year-old record.
Gill crossed the 10-run mark for India in the second innings of the fifth Test during the first session of the third day’s play.

Before breaking Gooch’s record, Gill broke Sunil Gavaskar’s record of scoring the most runs in a Test series for India as captain in the first innings.
Gavaskar played six matches as captain in the 1978-79 India-West Indies Test series and scored a total of 732 runs.

Gill will now look to break Gavaskar’s record of scoring the most runs in a Test series for India. In his debut series for India against the West Indies in 1971, Gavaskar played four red-ball matches in the Caribbean islands and scored 774 runs.

The 25-year-old right-handed batter from Punjab needs to score at least 32 runs in the second innings to go past that run mark.
If Gill scores at least 68 runs in the second innings, then he will break Don Bradman’s record of scoring the most runs in a Test series as captain. Bradman played five matches against England in the 1936-37 Ashes series in Australia and in nine innings scored a total of 810 runs.
