The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has officially released senior pacer Jasprit Bumrah from their squad for the ongoing fifth Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy Test. The pacer was rested from the game and replaced by Akash Deep, despite the series being on the line, to manage his long-term workload.

As head coach Gautam Gambhir declared after the fourth Test at Old Trafford, Bumrah and all other Indian pacers were fit to play in the fifth game. But, Bumrah, Gambhir, and captain Shubman Gill had all already confirmed that he was advised to play only three of the five Tests, irrespective of the result.

“It’s quite a complex issue around Bumrah,” assistant coach Ryan ten Doeschate explained after the first day’s play. “We obviously want to wheel him in, but we also want to respect where his body’s at, and on the basis of that, we just felt that it wasn’t worth including him in the squad.”

“He has bowled a large number of overs, I know it doesn’t always seem like that because he’s only played three Tests and he only bowled in one innings in Manchester. But if you look at the loads, he’s bowled a lot of overs, and like he did say coming into the tour, he was going to be available for three games, and we just felt it was right to honour that call,” Ten Doeschate added.

Questions have been raised about whether Bumrah is ‘picking and choosing’ which games he would play. A recent report even said that the BCCI’s reconsidering picking Bumrah for Test series where he won’t be fit for all games. But Ten Doeschate strongly defended the bowler against it.

“I don’t think picking and choosing is a fair comment to Bumrah. He did say he was going to play three games, he left it up to us which three he played. We’ve tried to manage the situation, it’s not ideal, I guess giving those guys attention, the guys who aren’t playing particularly when you’re carrying 18 is important,” he added.

India’s updated squad for the fifth Test

Shubman Gill (C), KL Rahul (VC), Yashasvi Jaiswal, Sai Sudharsan, Abhimanyu Easwaran, Karun Nair, Ravindra Jadeja, Dhruv Jurel (WK), Washington Sundar, Shardul Thakur, Mohd. Siraj, Prasidh Krishna, Akash Deep, Kuldeep Yadav, Anshul Kamboj, Arshdeep Singh, and N Jagadeesan (WK)
