Laptops have become a vital part of daily life, serving purposes ranging from work and studies to entertainment. However, a common issue faced by users is rapid battery degradation or insufficient backup duration.

While many might assume that the quality of the laptop company is to blame, the longevity of a battery largely depends on how the device is used. Adopting certain practices can significantly enhance battery life, enabling laptops to run for extended periods without the need for constant charging.

Here are some effective methods to prolong laptop battery life:

  • Avoid Overcharging: Continuously charging the laptop can harm the battery. Ensure the battery does not drop below 20% and disconnect the charger when it reaches 80-90%.
  • Use Original Chargers: To preserve battery health, always use the charger provided by the laptop manufacturer. Local chargers may deliver incorrect voltage, potentially damaging the battery.
  • Protect From Heat: Heat is detrimental to battery life. Use the laptop on a flat, hard surface to ensure proper ventilation. Avoid using it on soft surfaces like beds or blankets, which can trap heat.
  • Utilise Power Settings: Activate Power Saver Mode or Battery Saver Mode on the laptop to reduce battery load and extend backup time.
  • Close Background Apps: Unnecessary applications and software running in the background can drain the battery. Close these through the task manager to improve battery performance.
  • Reduce Screen Brightness: High screen brightness accelerates battery discharge. Adjust the brightness to the minimum required level.
  • Turn Off Wi-Fi And Bluetooth: Disable Wi-Fi and Bluetooth when not in use, as they continuously consume battery power.
  • Avoid Deep Discharge: Frequently discharging the battery to 0% shortens its lifespan. Try to recharge the battery when it reaches 20-30% capacity.
  • Perform Battery Calibration: Every few months, fully charge the battery and then discharge it completely. This helps the battery sensor display accurate data and maintain battery health.
  • Keep Software And Drivers Updated: Regularly update the laptop’s operating system and drivers to optimise battery usage effectively.
