Elon Musk’s Starlink internet service was available for over 2.5 hours
Elon Musk’s Starlink faced a massive internet outage on Friday which affected thousands of people living in the US. The satellite-based internet service has usually held strong but this sudden down time came at the worst possible juncture, especially for some of them who were out in the wilderness with no other network range in sight.
The outage report platform Downdetector saw a huge spike in Starlink outage reports, with more than 60,000 facing issues accessing their Starlink network in the early hours of Friday around 12:50 AM IST.
Starlink Down, Elon Musk Says Sorry
Starlink shared its official report which confirmed its more than 2-hour long outage this week, and assured it will share more details once the service is restored. Meanwhile, Elon Musk assured that SpaceX will get into fixing the root cause to make sure it doesn’t happen again.
Starlink is currently in a network outage and we are actively implementing a solution. We appreciate your patience, we’ll share an update once this issue is resolved.— Starlink (@Starlink) July 24, 2025
Service will be restored shortly.Sorry for the outage.
SpaceX will remedy root cause to ensure it doesn’t happen again. https://t.co/q1bsTVtMZ7

People were clearly caught unaware by the long Starlink outage, especially since nobody from the company or even Musk shared the issue immediately. So, understandably they were not pleased with how long it took them to give an official status post, which some of them appreciated but others wanted it quicker.
Why was the post made a good hour after this occurred as opposed to an automated post or notification to users? Wasted way too much time thinking the issue was on my end — after having search for a network outage possibility.— Pete String (@Pete0041) July 24, 2025
No information in this starlink status, plus i had to waist a half an hour looking for problems that could of been on my end. when there is a major outage they need to post on x quickly.— Patrick Faith (@PatrickFaith) July 24, 2025
Some even saw the funny side of the outage, thinking they might have missed paying the Starlink bills which is why they lost the network.
Rebooted at least 3 times and even walked up the mountain to get 2G mobile coverage to check whether I paid the bill. 🤦🏻♂️— Dr. Simon Goddek (@goddeketal) July 24, 2025
After more than 2 hours, the company finally decided to share the actual issue that caused the Starlink outage. “The outage was due to failure of key internal software services that operate the core network. We apologize for the temporary disruption in our service; we are deeply committed to providing a highly reliable network, and will fully root cause this issue and ensure it does not occur again,” as mentioned by Micheal Nicolls, VP of Starlink Engineering at SpaceX in a post earlier on Friday.
Even though Starlink claims the outage lasted for around 2.5 hours, some people claim in other regions the down time was a lot longer. They also hope the company does a complete post-mortem of the outage and shares the findings with the public in due course.
