Chennai Super Kings captain Ruturaj Gaikwad has left a heartwarming message for Ravichandran Ashwin, who announced his retirement from the Indian Premier League earlier this week, saying that he was privileged to share the dressing room with the veteran India spinner at Chennai.
In the Indian Premier League, Ashwin was one of the brightest minds to play the game, making his debut for Chennai in 2009.
Ashwin’s last appearance too came in the yellow jersey in IPL 2025, after rejoining Chennai for Rs 9.75 crore after a decade-long gap.
“To watching you play for the OG CSK and then getting to play alongside in yellow, privileged to share the dressing room with you, Ash anna,” Gaikwad wrote on his Instagram story.
Chennai earlier paid an emotional tribute in a social media post.
“Chepauk’s own.The carrom-ball thiruppura-sundaran! From your first run-ups in Yellove on the dusty tracks of Anbuden to absolute spin domination in the world’s grandest arenas, you’ve given us everything,” the post read.
The announcement came amidst speculations earlier this month that were rife over Ashwin’s future at Chennai after an underwhelming IPL 2025, where he played just nine games, his second-lowest in a season since he featured in just two matches in his debut in 2009.
Amidst talk of a possible trade involving Rajasthan Royals captain Sanju Samson, Ashwin had admitted that he had sought clarity from Chennai on his role.
“Last year, I played only nine games; in all my years of playing in the IPL, that was the first year I played just nine games. I always used to play every game… so it was my first experience like that,” Ashwin said while speaking on his YouTube channel in a podcast with Samson.
Ashwin acknowledged the buzz around a possible trade with the Rajasthan skipper but stressed that much of it was outside the cricketers’ control.
