At a review meeting with the Kargil Development Authority on August 26, Gupta highlighted the importance of identifying fresh locations across the district that could be transformed into visitor-friendly attractions.
“Kargil has much more to offer than the existing attractions. Riverbanks, hill viewpoints, cultural landmarks and heritage sites can be developed to give visitors a wider experience of the region,” he said, according to PTI.
The Lieutenant Governor stressed that new recreational zones would not only disperse tourist activity evenly but will generate fresh livelihood opportunities for local residents. The development authority has been tasked with drafting a roadmap to showcase unexplored natural spots and integrate them into Ladakh’s broader tourism circuit.

As immediate measures, Gupta directed the rapid beautification of Bul-Bul Bagh, Sher Bagh and the riverfront at the Tourist Facilitation Centre. Plans include landscaped parks, walkways, gardens and seating areas designed to blend modern amenities with the natural beauty of the region.
“Tourists come to Kargil for its history and landscapes, but they also need places to relax and connect with local culture. Creating such spaces will not only beautify the town but also encourage visitors to extend their stay,” he noted.
Gupta emphasised that all development must reflect Kargil’s cultural ethos and adhere to sustainable practices to safeguard its fragile environment. “Tourism development must balance growth with environmental responsibility,” he added.
