Every youngster faces the dilemma – to spend freely or to save for the future. It’s hard to keep both when they have societal expectations in the age of social media, while there’s a growing uncertainty and urge to save for the future.

Edelweiss Mutual Fund CEO Radhika Gupta, in a recent social media post, tried to iron out this struggle that many young professionals today grapple with: “To YOLO or to save?”

Gupta highlighted that the choice is not binary. “Reality is life is not a choice between YOLO and savings… it’s a balance,” she wrote, recalling how her father once splurged on records, just as today’s youngsters may spend on concerts or branded items.

To simplify personal finance for millennials and Gen Z, Gupta referred to the “10-30-50 rule” from her book Mango Millionaire. The principle is straightforward: save 10% of income in your 20s, 30% in your 30s, and 50% in your 40s. The rationale is that financial responsibilities grow with age, and higher incomes later in life allow for greater savings.

She also introduced a concept she calls “SDS — Savings Deducted at Source.” Just like tax is automatically deducted from salaries, Gupta suggests automating investments through SIPs, recurring deposits or fixed deposits before money even reaches one’s account. “Habits matter more than amounts,” she emphasized, noting that even starting with 1% in the early years can build the right discipline.

Gupta’s message is clear: young professionals don’t need to choose between buying a handbag and saving for a start-up dream. With automation and consistency, both goals can coexist. “That, Gen Z, is the real flex,” she concluded.
