Google’s last Pixel Tablet was announced back in 2023 and we have not seen a new model for 2 years. It seems the company has given up on the segment, and would rather focus on making its Pixel Folds better with every generation. However, Google is unlikely to bring a flip version of the Pixel ever, and it feels happy with the options available from its partners like Samsung and Motorola.

The company was quoted in a recent interview by Bloomberg, where it talks about the scope of having more tablets, why it doesn’t want too many products and more.

End Of Pixel Tablets?

Google Chief for devices Shakil Barkat, said it has ‘paused’ the development on Pixel tablet and cited reasons like ‘failure’ to predict a future market for these products. The executive was also quoted saying, Google does not see a market where people need more than a phone, watch, earbuds and even glasses.

It doesn’t have tablets in that picture, which may seem odd and contradicting to what Apple and Samsung are doing, but it does seem like a premature end of the Pixel tablet lineup.

The report also claims that Google realises the need to keep its 7 OS upgrades promise offering across categories, and having a tablet in the mix puts more pressure on its resources and investment.

So, the company is happy with a lean product catalogue, where it can fully deliver on its software promise. “Every time a new type of category of product gets added, the bar on maintenance for the end user keeps going up. It’s already pretty painful,” he was quoted saying in the report.

Pixel Flip Phones Not Needed

The report also sees Google share insights around the flip phone segment, and why a Pixel model doesn’t make sense. The executive confirmed that Google is not working on a flip-style foldable, and is happy to sit out that race. Having said that, it wants to be focused on making the Pixel Fold better, and get the screen crease reduced to give a seamless experience in the near future.

Google Pixel 10 series was launched earlier this month, including the new Pixel 10 Pro Fold model. The regular phones will be going on sale from August 28, while the Pro foldable will be available in the next few months.
