Ganesh Chaturthi is celebrated with great devotion and splendour across India each year. This year, the festival falls on Wednesday, August 27. Devotees believe that the arrival of Ganpati Bappa fills homes and surroundings with happiness, prosperity, good luck, and positive energy. Bappa is revered as the remover of obstacles and the harbinger of new beginnings, and his presence is believed to bring peace, harmony, and blessings to every household.

To ensure that the blessings of Bappa fill the home, it is important to follow certain rules and traditions during his installation and worship. Many small mistakes made in excitement can reduce the efficacy of the prayers or affect the harmony of the household. Astrologer Anshul Tripathi shares guidelines to properly welcome and worship Bappa at home.

Before Bringing Ganpati Bappa Home

  • While buying a Ganpati idol, ensure it is made of pure clay, which is eco-friendly and easy to immerse later.
  • Choose an idol facing east or north for maximum auspiciousness.
  • Before bringing it home, wrap the idol carefully in a red or yellow cloth.
  • Bring it into the house respectfully, as if welcoming God himself.
  • Devotees often use drums, conch shells, or chant mantras during the procession to create a positive atmosphere.

During Installation

The most auspicious spot for installing the idol is the north-east corner of the house. Place the idol on a wooden stand, spread with a red or yellow cloth. Keep a Kalash filled with water, betel nut, mango leaves, and a coconut beside the idol as a symbol of prosperity. All family members should be present during the installation and perform aarti with appropriate mantras.

Daily Worship At Home

Perform aarti every morning and evening. Offer fresh flowers, fruits, and Bappa’s favourite bhog such as modak, or jaggery. Maintain a calm and positive atmosphere, avoiding arguments or negative conversations. Light a diya and incense in front of Bappa daily to keep positive energy flowing in the house.

Things to Avoid

  • Never place the idol directly on the ground; always use a stool or mat.
  • Worship in clean clothes and avoid wearing shoes or slippers near the idol.
  • Keep the area around Bappa clean and free of clutter.
  • Avoid meat, alcohol, and negative habits during the festival.
  • Do not leave the idol unattended; if no one is at home, keep a lamp burning near the idol.

Before Immersion

Before bidding farewell to Bappa, show the same love and respect as during installation. Traditionally, idols are kept at home for 1, 3, 5, or 11 days before immersion. Offer bhog and perform aarti before immersion. For eco-friendliness, consider using an artificial water tank or a bucket at home instead of a river or pond, bidding farewell with the chant of, “Ganpati Bappa Morya.”
