No need for electric vehicles to pay toll on these three major express roads in Maharashtra

In what is a landmark decision by the Maharashtra government to encourage vehicle owners to shift towards environmentally sustainable transport, a full toll exemption has been implemented for electric vehicles (EVs) on key routes, including the Atal Setu, Mumbai-Pune Expressway and the Samruddhi Mahamarg connecting Nagpur and Mumbai. The exemption came into effect on August 22, 2025.

The policy, framed under the Motor Vehicles Taxation Act of 1958, was approved by Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis and Deputy Chief Ministers Eknath Shinde and Ajit Pawar. Maharashtra’s Transport Minister, Pratap Sarnaik, confirmed the implementation of the initiative during a press briefing.

All categories of electric vehicles, including four-wheelers and buses, will benefit from the exemption. Specifically, EVs classified under M2, M3, and M6 vehicle categories, covering private four-wheelers and buses operated by both State Transport Undertakings (STUs) and private entities, are eligible.

“By waiving tolls for electric vehicles, we are not only supporting EV owners but taking a significant step towards reducing carbon emissions and promoting a cleaner environment,” said Minister Sarnaik. He added that the move is in line with the state’s long-standing commitment to green mobility and sustainable infrastructure.

The exemption will apply across critical infrastructure corridors, including the Atal Setu, connecting Mumbai and Navi Mumbai, the busy Mumbai-Pune Expressway, and the high-speed Samruddhi Mahamarg, which links Mumbai and Nagpur.

Industry analysts have welcomed the move, calling it a boost for Maharashtra’s growing EV ecosystem. The policy is expected to make electric vehicles more economically viable for both private owners and commercial fleet operators by significantly reducing operational costs.

Experts believe the move will incentivise the transition to clean energy vehicles, helping Maharashtra edge closer to its broader environmental and climate targets.
