The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) on Friday approved the nomination of Executive Director Indranil Bhattacharyya as an ex officio member of the Monetary Policy Committee (MPC). He replaces Rajiv Ranjan, who is retiring ahead of the October policy review.
Bhattacharyya, who recently took charge as Executive Director of the RBI’s Monetary Policy Department, will join the six-member MPC for its upcoming meeting scheduled between September 29 and October 1. The decision was taken during the 618th meeting of the RBI’s Central Board of Directors in Lucknow, chaired by Governor Sanjay Malhotra.
Who is Indranil Bhattacharyya?
With more than 28 years in central banking, Bhattacharyya has spent a major part of his career working on monetary policy. He joined the RBI as Executive Director of the Department of Economic and Policy Research in March this year before moving to the Monetary Policy Department.
Between 2009 and 2014, he served as an economic expert at the Qatar Central Bank in Doha. An alumnus of Jawaharlal Nehru University, New Delhi, he holds a postgraduate degree in economics. His areas of expertise include monetary economics, monetary policy, and financial market analysis, and he has authored several research papers in Indian and international journals.
RBI Board Reviews Economic Situation
In addition to Bhattacharyya’s nomination, the Board reviewed the global and domestic economic environment, taking stock of geopolitical and financial market developments and their implications. It also assessed the functioning of select Central Office Departments of the RBI.
Deputy Governors Rajeshwar Rao, T Rabi Sankar, Swaminathan J, Dr Poonam Gupta, and other Directors of the Central Board attended the meeting.
