Why Should We Avoid Seeing the Moon on Ganesh Chaturthi?

One important and widely followed ritual during Ganesh Chaturthi is to avoid seeing the Moon on the day of Chaturthi. This is based on an ancient belief linked to a story from Hindu mythology.

According to the legend, once Lord Ganesha was travelling on his mouse when he stumbled and fell because of his weight. The Moon saw this and laughed at him, which made Lord Ganesha very angry. In his anger, Ganesha cursed the Moon, saying that anyone who sees the Moon on Ganesh Chaturthi will be falsely accused and face dishonour.

This curse is called Mithya Dosham or Mithya Kalank, meaning a false accusation of theft. The story is also connected to Lord Krishna, who was once falsely accused of stealing a precious jewel called Syamantaka after he accidentally saw the Moon on Ganesh Chaturthi. To remove the curse, Krishna observed a fast on Ganesh Chaturthi.

What to Do If You Accidentally See the Moon?

If you accidentally see the Moon on Ganesh Chaturthi, don’t worry. You can follow Lord Krishna’s example by observing a fast on this day to remove the effects of the curse.

It is also recommended to chant the following mantra for protection:

Simhah Prasenamavadhitsimho Jambavata Hatah।

Sukumaraka Marodistava Hyesha Syamantakah॥

Ganesh Chaturthi 2025: Fasting Rules

Fasting during Ganesh Chaturthi is a common practice, but the rules can vary based on personal preference and health. Some devotees fast for the whole day, while others may limit fasting to certain hours or meals.

Key fasting guidelines include:

  • Maintain purity in body and mind during the fast by avoiding negative thoughts and gossip.
  • Focus on prayer and mantra chanting.
  • Avoid non-vegetarian food.
  • Many people avoid onions and garlic during the fast.
  • Use minimal spices and oil while preparing fasting meals.
  • Avoid regular salt; instead, use rock salt (sendha namak), which is considered pure for fasting.
  • If observing a nirjal (waterless) fast, make sure to drink plenty of water before and after fasting.
