India’s Test captain Shubman Gill is back in T20Is, and the 25-year-old right-handed batter from Punjab will be Suryakumar Yadav’s deputy in the Asia Cup 2025, which is set to be played from September 9 to 28 in Dubai and Abu Dhabi. Gill last played a T20I for India on July 30, 2024 against Sri Lanka in Pallekele, and in that fixture as well he was India’s vice-captain.

In the 15-member squad for the Asia Cup, Jasprit Bumrah is also included along with Jitesh Sharma, who last played a T20I for India in January 2024, but there was no place for Yashasvi Jaiswal and Shreyas Iyer.

Fast bowler Mohammed Shami played in the last T20I series against England in January-February 2025, but he has also been dropped from the squad, and IPL 2025 purple cap winner Prasidh Krishna was also not considered for a place in the Indian team by the Ajit Agarkar-led selection committee, along with Mohammed Siraj.

India to open campaign against UAE

In the Asia Cup 2025, India will open their campaign on September 10 in Dubai against the United Arab Emirates and then take on arch-rivals Pakistan in the high-voltage match at Dubai International Cricket Stadium on September 14. India’s third and final Group A match is scheduled to take place in Abu Dhabi on September 19 against Oman.

During the presser at BCCI Headquarters in Mumbai on Tuesday (August 19), chief selector Ajit Agarkar confirmed that Prasidh Krishna, Washington Sundar, Riyan Parag, Yashasvi Jaiswal and Dhruv Jurel are picked as stand-bys for the Asia Cup.
