Musk is going after Apple for its alleged bias towards other AI companies and not putting Grok AI on its App Store charts.

Musk is not happy about how Grok AI is listed on the App Store
Elon Musk is now going after Apple for its supposed anti-competitive policies which has kept ChatGPT at the top of App Store charts but no place for his Grok AI app on the platform. Musk is clearly invested in the growth and popularity of his apps, including X (formerly Twitter), frequently sharing their app store positions proudly.
But he is not pleased with how the company has overlooked Grok AI in these charts and allegedly giving preference to OpenAI apps instead. Musk has even accused Apple of refusing to put Grok app in the “Must Have” section, even though X is part of that list in the news category. He shared all this via a post on his platform X earlier this week.
Hey @Apple App Store, why do you refuse to put either ???? or Grok in your “Must Have” section when ???? is the #1 news app in the world and Grok is #5 among all apps? Are you playing politics? What gives? Inquiring minds want to know. https://t.co/3wenLZGtwG

Musk vs Apple: What Is The Matter?
The xAI founder is not happy about where the Grok AI sits on the App Store and accuses the iPhone maker of playing politics with its focus and bias towards OpenAI and ChatGPT. He further alleges that ChatGPT is there on every list where Apple has editorial control.
And guess who has come in to question Musk and his own practices? OpenAI’s Sam Altman, who says he has heard X is being manipulated to benefit Musk and his companies. He shared this in the same thread started by Musk.
This is a remarkable claim given what I have heard alleged that Elon does to manipulate X to benefit himself and his own companies and harm his competitors and people he doesn’t like. https://t.co/HlgzO4c2iC— Sam Altman (@sama) August 12, 2025
The X founder also says that Apple makes it impossible for any AI company besides OpenAI to become the top app on the App Store. He even says that xAI will be taking immediate legal action.
Apple Responds
Musk’s allegations have clearly reached the corners of Apple Park in California, and the company has been quoted with a statement by Bloomberg in its report. Apple clearly denies any kind of favouritism for a particular app or company and talks about the listing curated by experts with their criterias.
“We feature thousands of apps through charts, algorithmic recommendations, and curated lists selected by experts using objective criteria. Our goal is to offer safe discovery for users and valuable opportunities for developers, collaborating with many to increase app visibility in rapidly evolving categories,” Apple is quoted saying.
OpenAI and Apple do have a deal in place which allows ChatGPT to run on iPhones and other Apple devices. But reports say neither of the companies get monetary benefits or other exceptions from the deal.
Musk has become quite regular with his fights, especially with Altman and OpenAI, and all these questions are likely to be raised if he decides to go ahead with the threat of legally fighting Apple and its practices.
