Google speaks on the concern around AI search traffic push
Google is pushing AI search overviews on its results page for users, which directly impacts how you click on links and how publishers get paid for their reach. Many companies have cited concerns about this AI shift and affecting their future earnings and business scope. But Google has tried its best to calm the seas by offering a differing view about the situation.
Google is adamant that going AI for search is not making an impact on the traffic for websites that deal in content. The AI-generated summary of articles has become a serious discussion in the media circuit and reports claim the new features are tanking the web traffic for many.
Google’s AI Defense: Does It Make Sense?
Google says the search volume has been stable (compared to last year) even after the AI upgrades were available to the public. It does highlight that some types of websites have taken a hit while others have gone up. The company further suggests the AI search is actually helping platforms get more users but we are finding it hard to believe, especially how other reports are claimed to be flawed.
AI Overviews and AI mode in Search are getting a lot of mileage on the internet and people are clearly finding it easy to find content, rather than clicking on links for multiple stories to read. The AI summary is a strong weapon in Google’s armoury and its future will be harrowing for publishers if the early signs are anything to go by.
Google has also changed its focus on the kind of content it wants people to read and the emphasis on original, in-depth articles. Publishers are slowly aligning to these changes but the numbers have not shown its impact just yet.
Google is investing billions in AI, making people redundant to replace them with AI and now Search is going AI which affects people outside the corners of the company. Where the future goes, we don’t know but it is certain that Google will have a say on it.
