MS Dhoni’s future with the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) has to be the biggest mystery in the Indian cricketing circuit. The former Indian captain retired from international cricket back in 2020 but continues to play in the IPL. Even last season, he led CSK after Ruturaj Gaikwad was ruled out of the tournament with an injury. However, with age catching up, the fans are now curious about his longevity as a player for CSK.

Dhoni, who turned 44 last month, is yet to decide on his IPL future. At every public appearance, his comments only add to the suspense about whether he will play again. Recently, at an event, when asked about returning for IPL 2026, he said he still has plenty of time to decide, but admitted that his recurring knee pain has become increasingly frustrating.

“I don’t know whether I’ll play or not. I have time to decide. I have some time until December, so I’ll take another couple of months, and then finally, I can make my decision,” Dhoni told the host.

But as soon as Dhoni was done replying to the question, someone from the crowd passionately urged, “You have to play, sir.”

Dhoni, known for his sharp wit, instantly came up with a response that drew laughter from the crowd.

Arre, ghutne me jo dard hota hai uska take care kaun karega? (The pain I have in my knees, who will take care of that?)”

Dhoni’s knee issues have drawn attention in recent seasons. After leading CSK to the 2023 title, he underwent surgery, having played through pain and delaying treatment to ensure recovery before IPL 2024.

CSK have won two of the last five IPL seasons. However, in the remaining three, they have failed to qualify for the playoffs. Recently, the former captain admitted the slump in the team’s performance.

“Yes, the last couple of years have not been good for us. We have not been up to the mark. However, what is important is for you to see the lessons learned. Yes, you had a bad season. But what went wrong? And that was the question for us last year also,” Dhoni had said.
