Former India captain Sourav Ganguly has said that all coaches and skippers have discussions with the groundsmen and they aren’t always sweet conversations, asking everyone not to make too much out of the spat, after a video of a fight between Gambhir and the pitch curator at the Oval went viral.

Gambhir was on Tuesday involved in a heated exchange of words with the Oval’s chief curator, Lee Fortis and was heard telling him “you don’t tell us what we need to do” while pointing fingers at the groundstaff.

The Oval is hosting the fifth and final Test between India and England from Thursday and the Indian team has hit the ground running two days after staging a brilliant comeback to draw the fourth game in Manchester.

“I don’t know why Gambhir was upset. I’m sure all coaches and captains have discussions with the groundsmen, sometimes happily, sometimes unhappily. It’s happened in my time, it’s going to happen in future also,” Ganguly said while speaking to the media in Kolkata.

Gambhir and batting coach Sitanshu Kotak were inspecting the central square at The Oval as Fortis, through a messenger, asked them to stay 2.5 metres away from the playing pitch.

“Honestly, one of the ground staff came and said that we were required to stand 2.5 metres from the wicket and ‘go outside the rope and see the wicket’. I have never seen something like that,” Kotak said while speaking to the media after the incident.

“No complaint is needed for this,” Kotak added. He said that the Indian team members weren’t wearing spikes, so there was no element of danger to the pitch.

“Before this game, we had an idea that the curator isn’t the easiest person to work with. Being possessive is good, but not so much. We had joggers on (and) not spikes, so there was no danger,” Kotak said.
