Star India pacer Harshit Rana has revealed a crucial bowling advice that he received from ace batter Virat Kohli during the white-ball tour of Sri Lanka last year, wherein the latter asked Rana to bowl to a certain length to ensure that batters couldn’t drive him and would instead nick the ball.
Although Rana could only make his ODI debut earlier this year against England, he had received a call-up for the Sri Lanka series last year.
While one would expect Kohli to impart batting advice to upcoming youngsters, he also delivered some bowling tips to Rana.
“I was bowling in the nets to Virat bhaiya. It was my first tour and he wouldn’t have seen me bowling in one-dayers. I was bowling at a certain length and after he came out of the nets, he told me to change my length,” Rana said while speaking on Ranveer Allahbadia’s podcast.
“He asked me to bowl between 5-6m, whereas I was bowling around 7-8m. Virat bhaiya said that if I were to do that, I could extract a nick from the batter and it would be tough for them to drive me. He reminded me that twice,” Rana said.
The star Indian pacer was part of KKR’s IPL-winning team last year and finished as his team’s joint second-highest wicket-taker with 19 wickets in 13 outings.
Asked if he feels bad that the legends of the game are slowly bidding goodbye and the opportunity to learn from them is limited, Rana said, “Definitely it does. Rohit and Virat bhaiya have always told me to stay true to my game, keep expressing myself and not change it.”
“Don’t pay heed to the outside noise, they have said. The day you perform well, people will speak well. If you put up a basic performance, people will criticise you,” Rana said.
