Where Indians are headed for the Rakshabandhan and Janmashtami long weekends

With Rakshabandhan (August 27–31) and Janmashtami (September 4–6) falling just a week apart, Indian travellers are making the most of back-to-back long weekends. Accommodation search data from Agoda, tracked between May 1 and July 31, suggests that travellers are gravitating toward monsoon landscapes, short-haul international flights, and heritage hubs that work well for quick breaks.

Monsoon Hinterlands and Heritage Trails Lead Domestically

Goa took the top spot for domestic searches across both long weekends. Rather than the peak-season beach scene, traveller interest is centring on Goa’s monsoon appeal, from inland waterfalls and lush countryside to quieter hinterland stays.

For the Rakshabandhan break, Mumbai and Puri followed Goa in the top three. While Mumbai remains a pick for dining, culture, and entertainment, Puri offers a distinct combination of Jagannath Temple visits and coastal downtime. The broader top 15 for the weekend includes classic monsoon hill stations like Ooty, Munnar, and Lonavala, as well as Varanasi for temple visits along the ghats.

For Janmashtami, Udaipur moved into second place behind Goa, driven by interest in its Mewar-era palaces and lake settings, while Mumbai held third. Other domestic destinations seeing strong interest include Pondicherry, Chennai, Jaipur, and Leh, with the latter drawing travellers looking for high-altitude Buddhist monasteries and mountain landscapes.

Southeast Asia and Dubai Dominate Overseas Searches

On the international front, travellers are mostly sticking to quick-flight regional destinations across Southeast Asia and the Middle East.

Singapore emerged as the most-searched international destination for both long weekends. Its mix of distinct cultural neighbourhoods—including Little India, Chinatown, and Kampong Gelam—along with gardens and hawker food makes it an easy fit for a short itinerary. Bali also held strong across both weekends, appealing to travellers looking for temple culture alongside beach stays.

The third spot varied by weekend. Bangkok ranked third for Rakshabandhan, favoured for its street food and temple circuits, while Dubai took third for Janmashtami, offering city attractions paired with desert tours.
