Italy defies decline in Hong Kong apparel imports on luxury demand

The increase indicated relative resilience in demand for Italian premium and luxury apparel despite weakness in the overall import market. Italy’s established reputation for high-end fashion, craftsmanship and designer labels may have helped its shipments outperform the broader trend.

China remained Hong Kong’s largest apparel supplier, although imports declined to $*.*** billion from $*.*** billion. Its market share fell to **.** per cent from **.** per cent. Vietnam ranked third, with shipments increasing by *.* per cent to $***.*** million, while imports from France surged by **.* per cent to $***.*** million. Cambodia supplied apparel worth $**.*** million.

Trade data of TexPro reveals, womenswear accounted for the largest share of imports at $*.*** billion, or **.** per cent, followed by unisex apparel at $*.*** billion and menswear at $***.*** million in January-June ****. Cotton apparel dominated material-wise, accounting for $*.*** billion, or **.** per cent, while man-made fibre apparel contributed $***.*** million.
