July exports hold up against a record base

The Export Promotion Bureau (EPB) reports Bangladesh’s RMG exports at $*.** billion in July ****, down *.** per cent year on year but up **.** per cent from June. Shipments to the US, the industry’s largest market, rose *.** per cent to $***.** million. The year-on-year decline is largely a base effect: July **** was the highest single-month RMG export performance on record, as exporters accelerated US shipments ahead of new tariffs that took effect in August ****.

TexPro data on US imports of Bangladeshi knitted and woven apparel (HS ** + HS **) supports the same reading. Combined imports stood at $***.* million in July **** and peaked at $***.* million in September **** during the US holiday-shipping season. Based on TexPro data, January-May **** combined imports totalled $*.** billion, about * per cent below the same period a year earlier. May ****, however, showed a year-on-year recovery of nearly * per cent. The US market is stabilising rather than collapsing.
