The project will connect the Sant Gadge Maharaj Chowk Monorail Station, Metro Line 3 and Mahalaxmi suburban railway station through an integrated pedestrian bridge, enabling passengers to interchange between the three transport systems.
According to the MMRDA, the integrated interchange is expected to reduce passenger transfer time by around 20 minutes once operational, improve access to the Mumbai Monorail from South Mumbai and Worli, and encourage greater use of public transport through seamless multimodal connectivity.
The project comprises an approximately 283-metre-long, 11-metre-wide integrated pedestrian bridge equipped with six travellators spanning a combined length of 176 metres. It will also feature two passenger lifts for universal accessibility and is designed to accommodate around 4,500 passengers every hour.
MMRDA said the project is being executed in one of Mumbai’s most utility-congested corridors. Before foundation work began, a 1,800 mm-diameter stormwater drain was safely relocated, while adjacent water supply and sewer pipelines remained undisturbed, ensuring uninterrupted civic services throughout construction.
The authority added that the project has been executed without felling a single tree. Traffic was managed in coordination with the Traffic Police, while the annual Ganesh Visarjan processions along Sane Guruji Marg continued without disruption during construction.
Describing it as more than a pedestrian bridge, MMRDA said the project marks another step towards an integrated public transport ecosystem where the Metro, Monorail and suburban railway work together as a seamless network for Mumbai.
