
What the OTEXA data reveals
Total US apparel imports fell to roughly $**.** billion in January-May ****, down about *.* per cent year-over-year, as per OTEXA, the US government body that counts every garment entering the country.
Now the split beneath it. Cambodia was the fastest-growing supplier, nearly ** per cent in value growth and over ** per cent in volume growth. Indonesia followed with *.* per cent growth in value and over ** per cent in volume. Vietnam, the top supplier, held its lead with exports up *.* per cent to $*.** billion and positive volume growth.
Several traditional suppliers moved in the opposite direction. China’s apparel exports to the US fell **.* per cent by value to $*.** billion, while shipment volume declined nearly ** per cent. India’s exports dropped **.* per cent. Bangladesh recorded an *.* per cent decline in value to $*.** billion, with shipment volume falling *.* per cent to *.** billion square metre equivalents (SME).
