UK visa fees go up: What it means for travellers, students and workers

The increase, though moderate, comes as part of the UK government’s push to build a more “streamlined, digital immigration system”.

Officials say the higher charges will help maintain a secure and efficient visa process.

The mission has clarified that there is no cap on applications, and most visas will continue to be processed within three weeks, offering some reassurance amid the price hike.

For travellers, the immediate impact is higher upfront costs.

A standard six-month visitor visa will now cost £135, up from £127. Longer-term visitor visas — often preferred by frequent travellers and families — will also see increases, with the 10-year visa now priced at £1128.

Students, one of the largest applicant groups from India, will now pay £558 for a study visa, up from £524.

Meanwhile, skilled professionals applying for work visas (up to three years) will see fees rise to £819 from £769.

While the hikes may not appear steep individually, they add to the overall cost of moving or travelling abroad — especially when combined with living expenses, tuition fees or relocation costs. For students and families in particular, this could mean tighter budgeting or reassessing timelines.

The UK government maintains that the revisions are necessary to improve service delivery and keep pace with rising global demand.
