UPI payments works across apps in India for users and now the feature is being enabled to work sans PIN numbers. Yes, you can simply enable UPI payments for your bank account by using biometric features like fingerprint sensor or Face ID for iPhone users. UPI payments have become ubiquitous across the country and even available outside of India in select markets these days. But the risk of UPI scams have made it critical that the payment system gets further solidified.

And moving UPI payments out of the PIN ecosystem means the chances of UPI scams reduce dramatically but using the payment app becomes easier and a lot more safer because of these changes.

UPI Payments With A Tap: How It Works

Most smartphones come with support for facial and biometric security via fingerprint and UPI is tapping into these features to authorise payments securely.

These will be powered through apps like Paytm, Google Pay and more in the coming days, allowing you to use the on-device security rather than risk using the four or six-digit UPI PIN for payment. We got to try out the new UPI security option recently and it completely paves the way for biometric security to become the go-to option for making payments.

You can go to the payment settings for any of the popular UPI apps and get the option to enable the fingerprint payment feature for any of your accounts running on the platform.

Earlier it was mentioned that the new feature will work with Aadhaar-linked bank accounts and their biometric profiles. But we managed to get the feature working on one of our test accounts which now accepts a single tap on the screen to authenticate the payment. This way, you don’t have to worry about people prying into your screen to see the PIN number for payment.

Having said that, tapping the screen to make a payment does sound convenient and there are chances someone might (or find a way) misuse the feature. NPCI had previously removed the payment request feature in UPI apps in the country which makes it safer and prevents major online scams from draining money in your account.
