NASA is the latest entity to design and develop its own powerful supercomputer called Athena that will be enabling the space agency to execute for space missions and handle other advanced computing tasks. Set up in California, Athena will help NASA to simulate the calculations and tracking of the space and other unknown entities far away.

But like every other supercomputer predating Athena, NASA will be hoping to use the computing system to go beyond the conventional uses and really explore a new paradigm across the universe.

Athena – The New-Gen Space Supercomputer

NASA claims Athena can solve advanced mathematical problems in seconds thanks to its 20 petaflops of peak performance which makes it capable of solving 20 quadrillion calculations.

However, the most intriguing part about the design of Athena is that even with all this power under the hood, it has been made with efficiency in mind and the design facilitates better cooling and reduces the need to spend on its running cost.

The agency claims that running Athena could help them save up the extra money and invest that in building spacecraft for future missions. The supercomputer is available to NASA researchers and external scientists and researchers supporting NASA programs who can apply for time to use the system,” NASA in its detailed post.

What Athena Can Change For NASA?

Athena is going to unlock different avenues for NASA and it takes space exploration into a whole new stratosphere. The agency believes that with Athena it can develop AI models to help with mock space missions that deliver precise accuracy for astronauts and how they go about entering the orbit of a planet without any massive disruptions.

NASA is handing over the system to the Chief Science Data Officer, which gives them a flexible, hybrid computing approach that combines supercomputers with access to other tools, such as commercial cloud platforms.

And enabling Athena to read through massive tropes of dataset allows NASA to thoroughly study the dynamics of a planet before they decide to build the ideal spacecraft and launch vehicle for their missions. This is undoubtedly one of the biggest computing achievements for NASA and it will be shaping up the future of space frontiers with new breakthroughs for mankind.
