Teams and Google Meet are made in US platforms and the French government is looking to go local at least for its staff by next year.
France is looking to go local instead of using Teams and Zoom
France is looking to stop using video meetings apps like Zoom and Microsoft Teams and will rely on local products like Visio by 2027, as mentioned in a new report. The country’s government has been quoted by multiple publications in France, talking about the need to localise its resources amidst growing national security concerns across the globe.
“We’ve become dependent on programs like Teams or Zoom. We need to overcome this harmful habit at the national level to ensure the security of our negotiations under any circumstances. Therefore, by 2027, we will implement the videoconferencing solution Visio across all French administrations,” as said by David Amiel, Ministry of Civil Service in France, quoted in this report.
Is France’s Visio As Good As Zoom?
The Minister has talked about Visio which is a 100 percent French development, made by the Interministerial Digital Intelligence Unit (DINUM). He also mentioned that going local for the meeting apps will help the government save “millions of Euros” that are usually invested for deals with foreign software developers like Zoom and Microsoft Teams.
Talking about Visio, Amiel said that around 40,000 users have already tried the local platform and claims that the software uses an algorithm which instantly generates a text transcript of the meeting, similar to Google Meet and Zoom using AI tech for these features.
Replacing established platforms like Zoom and Teams is not going to be easy, at least for the regular users. And the French government probably realises the need to gradually embed its own platform among millions, which is why the deadline until next year gives people more time to make the switch.
We have already seen the Indian government switch to swadeshi apps like Zoho Mail for emails and even promoted Arattai messaging app as the local alternative to popular WhatsApp for millions in the country.
